The Eleventh Plague-Jeff Hirsch
|
The Eleventh Plague stars off with the main character Stephen Quinn burying his grandfather. Prior to his death Stephen's Grandfather was the leader of Stephen's survivor group which was basically his family. Stephen's grandfather was a very harsh guy, always telling you when you did something wrong. This affected Stephen greatly throughout the book because whenever he did something wrong he would hear his grandfather scolding him in his head with words like "stupid" and "wasteful". As the book progresses Stephen starts to break away from this and start to care about how his life is going to be a little bit happier with his life, I think this just connects to me because you have to take the good with the bad and not care what others think and just live your life like you want to. it can be hard but sometimes you just gotta go.
The Quote I chose for The Eleventh Plague was from a supporting character named Jenny saying " You fought for it. Don't be afraid to take it." (Hirsch 275). This is my golden quote because it shows how rewarding it can be when you accomplish something big and push through a struggle. Throughout the book the main character Stephen is constantly fighting to find his place and survive in this apocalyptic world and when we reach the end of the book he finally finds himself a home with people he can call his "family". It just goes to show that if you fight hard enough for something eventually it will come to you.
All the main character in my book wants is a place to call home. Born into apocalyptic America all he has ever known is the life of a survivor, traveling from place to place scavenging for supplies to stay alive. Early on in the book Stephen and his father are rescued and taken to a small community called "Settlers Landing." At Settlers Landing Stephen is finally able to live a somewhat normal life, by going to school, having a home, and meeting new friends. All of this comes with a price though as near the end of the book he is forced to defend his new home, ultimately leading to the books theme which is perseverance. There are many different inspiring stories about people who have overcome obstacles to reach their dreams and goals. A recent story in the news was how a woman dubbed worlds ugliest woman has became an anti bully advocate and is inspiring people all over the world.
In the fictional book The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch, we follow main character Stephen Quinn through apocalyptic America in his struggle for survival. All Stephen Quinn ever wants in his hectic life is a place where he can feel belonged and call home. Stephen lives the life of a nomadic Scavenger, moving from place to place in search of supplies for survival. However when Stephen's dad gets knocked into a coma, Stephen is forced to follow a group of Scavengers to a place called "Settler's Landing," which is a little town untouched by the outside world. Here, he is finally able to experience a somewhat normal life by making friends, living in an actual home, and going to school. Later on in the book Settler's landing is attacked by a group of people called "Slavers," which, other than the setting are the main antagonists of the book. Slavers are people who go around collecting defenseless survivors and using them as slaves. The people of Settlers Landing are then forced to combat the slavers in a large battle. I take this as a representation of fighting for what you want in life, the main theme of the book. After winning the battle at Settler's Landing, Stephen goes on to live his life the way he always wanted to.
